At the beginning of the 80s the Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) returned to the Peninsula with its arrival in the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà. The sparrow nest boxes are a kind of ceramic vessel, specially designed to offer a suitable place for the nesting of sparrows. They are suitable for both the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) and the Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) in order to contribute to the conservation of both species. The origin of this system, with different variations, was found in farmhouses of the 19th century. At this time they were not…

Using social networks they show us ‘dog friendly’ sites and establishments. Pipper has over 200,000 followers on Instagram and You Tube. We hope you enjoy this video too and don’t forget to share it on social media!
To catch the local wildlife in its natural habitat we used a camera trap technique which consists of installing cameras equipped with motion sensors that trigger when an animal approaches. This system is very useful for filming nocturnal or fearful species. Rabbits, nutria, otters, badgers, wild boars, foxes and various birds such as kingfishers and water rails are some of the species that have been captured on film. In the…

Beginning this month, new nest boxes have been installed throughout the campsite which will provide comfortable accommodation for birds of different species present in the area. Castell Mar is located in the middle of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park, one of the most important bird sanctuaries in Europe.
The boxes that are scattered throughout the campsite are used as a refuge by this species. The hoopoe is a bird that is not easy to catch sight of. Its presence is an indicator of environmental quality as it is a bird that feeds on insects and helps eliminate pests. It is a species much valued by many ornithologists, in particular those from Great Britain.
The visit was organised by the association of Girona campsites. The directors were able to discover first-hand the uniqueness of Camping Castell Mar a Dog Friendly campsite. In Holland, like here, there is a growing demand from people who want to go camping with their dog including specific services for their canine needs.
Famous naturalists Jordi Sargatal, Jaume Piera and Toni Llobet led the classes, in which the participants were shown various techniques in bird identification, biodiversity Apps and naturalist drawing . Those involved were able to take advantage of a special offer package combining accommodation on the campsite and the nature courses. Castell Mar has become one of the first establishments to offer overnight stays within the nature tourism model of the…

12 nests for storks (Himantopus himantopus) have been set up on a wetland around the campsite Castell Mar. This species is one of the most important migratory birds that breed in Catalonia. The area where the nests have been placed has an adequate water depth for the storks, who live in aquatic areas where reeds are present (wetlands, lagoons, ponds). To make them, plastic tubes were used to prevent predators…

A colony of wild rabbits that keeps growing year after year lives around the campsite in the Aiguamolls de l’Emporda natural parc which offers them protection from hunting. The four little geese of the campsite farm appear to have mistaken their carer for their mother. Our younger customers really enjoy seeing the geese running behind Gerard Carbonell, a biologist part of the entertainment team. He plays with various noisy instruments to attract the attention of the birds, using a technique called imprinting, which was discovered by the Austrian ethnologist Konrad Lorenz. Kids love to watch this noisy show…

Several horses are living freely in the fields around the campsite. To avoid the accumulation of excrement and at the same time utilise this resource as fertilizer, we created a mobile hen house. The chicken scatter the organic matter all over the field which makes a natural fertiliser for the ground. At the same time, the hens eat all types of insects which help to prevent bug invasions. The hen…
Since its reintroduction in the marshes in the late 1970s, the number of storks has risen dramatically to 90 pairs. Those who visit the Park at this time can see their nests and the storks themselves.
