Rare european rollers occupy the nestboxes at the entrance of Castell Mar

The European roller (Coracias garrulus) is a species of bird that is distinguished in flight by its bright blue color contrasting with the orange color of its back and the black of its wings.  This very interesting species Winters in Africa and then comes to nest in this area of Catalonia.  A few years ago there were only four couples left in the Aiguamolls del Empordà region but thanks to an agreement between the Association of Friends of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà (APNAE) and the electricity company Endesa, alongside the special collaboration of Camping Castell Mar, it has been possible to set up a project to safeguard this species.  The project consisted of installing nesting boxes on electric poles and as a result, around thirty pairs are currently nesting in the Natural Park. Some of them are visible on the entrance path to the Castell Mar campsite.
